Mr. Cyril Shroff is the Managing Partner of Cyril Amarchand Mangaldas and previously was the Managing Partner of Amarchand & Mangaldas & Suresh A. Shroff & Co., India’s largest and foremost law firm. The Firm has nearly 650 lawyers with offices in Mumbai, New Delhi, Bengaluru, Kolkata, Hyderabad, Chennai and Ahmedabad. Mr. Shroff was admitted to the Bar Council of Maharashtra & Goa (India) in 1982 after receiving his B.A., LLB degree from the Government Law College in Mumbai. He is also a Solicitor, Bombay Incorporated Law Society, since 1983.

With over 35 years of experience in a range of areas, including corporate laws, securities markets, banking, infrastructure, trust and estate laws, amongst many others. Mr. Shroff is regarded and has been consistently rated as India’s top corporate and finance lawyer by several international surveys including those conducted by International Financial Law Review (IFLR), Euromoney, Chambers Global, Asia Legal 500, Asia Law and others. He has won numerous awards from Legal Publications.

Mr. Shroff is also the head of the Private Client team. He has deep and unparalleled experience in advising family businesses, both in India and abroad, on a range of family business, governance, succession and wealth management issues. He specializes in advising business families on corporate governance and succession issues.

Mr. Shroff has worked on a number of Family Constitutions and Family Arrangements with some of India’s most prominent business families, and continues to act as their trusted advisor in multiple capacities. He was instrumental in mediating many prominent family disputes in India. He was also responsible for writing several of India’s Family Constitutions.

Mr. Shroff is actively involved in advising a number of clients on domestic and cross-border estate and succession planning issues. He is involved in the establishment of various trust structures, both in India and in a number of foreign jurisdictions, including the United Kingdom, the United States, Singapore, the Cayman Islands and the United Arab Emirates and often works with lawyers in other jurisdictions.

Mr. Shroff has been instrumental in advising the establishment of new family offices as well as providing ongoing strategic advice to families with established Family Offices. He is also a member of various advisory boards set up by the promoters of family businesses (formally and informally). He also takes interest in the grooming of the next generations of many family businesses, and often acts as the ‘mentor’ in many such families.

Mr. Shroff is also responsible for the Firm’s executorship and probate practice. He also advises on the drafting and structuring of domestic and international wills and other testamentary instruments.

Mr. Shroff is a Trust and Estate Practitioner. He is a Director and a senior member of ‘STEP Estate Planning India Private Limited’, the India Chapter of the Society of Trust and Estate Practitioners (STEP). Mr. Shroff is also the only member from India in the prestigious International Academy of Estate and Trust Law.

In addition to his Private Client experience, Mr. Shroff has authored several publications on legal topics. Recently he has been appointed on the governing council of Krea University (which is backed by IFMR). He is a member of the Advisory Board of the Centre for Study of the Legal Profession established by the Harvard Law School, and a member of the Advisory Board of the National Institute of Securities Markets. He is a member of the Media Legal Defence Initiative International Advisory Board. Mr. Shroff is also part of various committees of the Confederation of Indian Industry – the National Council on Corporate Governance, the National Committee on Capital Markets, Private Equity & Venture Capital, Commodities Markets, Financial Investors and Regulatory Affairs.
